A core principle of the Reformation of the 16th century was a turning from the Church's natural theology. It is true that God reveals himself to us as Creator via a general revelation in the creation itself, however, the reliance on this natural reasoning by a sinful creature for interpretation corrupts this revelation and at best can only lead to the worship of an unknown god, one subject to the interpreter(s). The Platonic/Aristotelian philosophy of the analogia entis (analogy of being) had influenced greatly the Church's dependence on natural theology.
The early reformers rejected this, turning to God's revelation of himself in his Word, the incarnate Jesus. This is where God is truly and vividly described to us from his works, while these very works are appraised not by our depraved judgment but by the rule of eternal truth.
Unfortunately, churches rooted in the Reformation have turned from this, relying instead upon teachings and philosophies of the Enlightenment, seeking to provide arguments based on reason and human discoveries.
A consequence of this erroneous theology, Christian Nationalism/Imperialism, has been demonstrated in "Christian empires" throughout history with false claims of following Christ and doing his work. Most recently we have seen this in 20th century Germany and today's United States.
